The first step is to schedule an initial consultation. This lasts 30 minutes and includes parent/s and child. We will discuss what type of support you are looking for and Amy will give your child a brief learning styles assessment. She will share your child's preferred learning style and some tips your child can use right away to build school confidence and success.
After the consultation, we will discuss scheduling. Typically, it's best for 6-8th graders to attend tutoring two times per week for 45 minute sessions. High school students do better with one hour sessions at least once/week. Sessions are scheduled Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm and Wednesdays from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm.
Amy and your child will work in tandem to prioritize how time is spent during sessions. Most tutoring is homework driven and executive function and other school success strategies are embedded into all academic support. Supplemental activities to homework include vocabulary development, essay writing practice, workload management, or any other needs appropriate for your child. Amy sends a weekly update via email outlining the session/s and next steps and students learn and use a calendaring system to learn to keep track of their assignments as well as estimate the amount of time they need to complete them and plan accordingly.
Typical session timeline:
5-10 minutes: snacks, completion of Do/Due Calendar, prioritization of work
30-50 minutes: direct academic input
Last 5 minutes: wrap up, plan, review
